Highcliffe
On the very edge of the east of Christchurch lies the village of Highcliffe, home to dramatic cliff top views and shingle beaches, high street shops and its very own castle!
Highcliffe is a great place to spend a day out - starting with a scrumptious full English breakfast at one of the local cafes, before exploring the castle where you may want to stop for lunch or an afternoon tea. From there you can amble across the peaceful nature reserve or take a stroll through the wooded glade down to the beach, where you can enjoy skimming stones across the sea or jumping in the waves. There's no better way to end the day than with dinner and entertainment at the Cliffhanger restaurant.
Highcliffe Castle is a magnificent Grade 1 listed building, once home to none other than Mr Selfridge. It has been described as arguably the most important surviving house of the Romantic and Picturesque style of architecture. The building’s history is a large part of today’s appeal and its story of how it has survived two major fires in its lifetime, undergoing subsequent extensive restoration, enabling visitors to wander through and explore three floors of fascinating history.
A number of exciting events and exhibits, catering for all tastes, take place at the castle every year. Have fun with the kids on the trails; the castle is suitable for all ages and the average visit will take between 1-2 hours. If you're looking for a wedding with a dramatic backdrop Highcliffe Castle hosts weddings throughout the year.
The annual celebration of culinary delights takes place with the Highcliffe Food & Arts Festival – a two-day event which has been running since 2014. Its origins began as a high street revival by members of the community to create something special and unique for the village. Nowadays it welcomes thousands of foodies every year and celebrates local and regional food and drink. It is a not-for-profit organisation and any money generated goes back into the festival to improve it year after year!
With award-winning beaches stretching out from Mudeford, two serene nature reserves abundant in wildlife – Steamer Point and Chewton Bunny – and being located on the very edge of the New Forest national park, Highcliffe is a haven for anyone with a taste for some fresh air and a sense of adventure.
Please visit the Highcliffe Village website for up-to-date information on local shops, businesses, the community and tourism.
